Report

North East Leeds grabbed their second win in a row to defeat a stubborn and hard working Guiseley team. The conditions meant that the game wasn’t going to be pretty due to the muddy pitch and strong winds.

NEL started on the front foot and made an immediate impact. A strong run on the right hand side by Michal fed Matthew who composedly finished from 6 yards. NEL didn’t stop there and made it two straight after when a through ball by Jake fed Michal who made no mistake after being one on one with the keeper. Jake produced a superb moment of skill to make it three when he turned and shot over the despairing keeper with some precision!

George looked solid in goal and the defence helped him by playing the ball simple and not giving the opposition time and space. Just before half time a quick throw and flick fed Matthew whose shot was parried straight to Michal to make it four. Chances a plenty were made by NEL but the Guiseley keeper kept the score line respectable.

The second half wasn’t so easy for NEL as the game was more or less won and the opposition were tiring and had injuries which put them down to 10 men as some points during the half but credit to them because they worked extremely hard and caused problems for NEL’s defence. They were rewarded as some poor defending and good attacking play lead to a Guiseley striker running through on goal and scoring after rounding George.

With 8 minutes to go Matthew again ran through on goal only for his shot to be parried straight into the path of Michal who scored his hat-trick goal.

The game ended 5-1 and was another fantastic home performance. Still plenty to work on in training if we want to compete at the top of the league but the signs look promising.

A special mention to Gary Speed who died shortly after the match ended, it puts football and life into perspective. A player who all young kids should look up to as the model professional, R.I.P Gary – Leeds and Everton Legend.
